CNN playback options and settings

There are a number of playback options available.

Which device are you using?

To see your playback options, tap the screen when you're watching something.

Play/Pause

Tap the Play/Pause button (middle of the screen) to toggle between play and pause. To watch in landscape, rotate your phone or tablet and make sure Auto-rotate is turned on for your device.

Skip back (Android)

Tap the skip back button (lower right) and then tap Rewind to rewind 15 seconds or tap Restart to restart what you're watching from the beginning.

Progress bar

The progress bar shows you where you are in what you’re watching. Tap the video to see the progress bar. You can tap anywhere on the bar, or tap and drag your location (the dot).

Volume

To adjust the volume, use the volume buttons on your phone or tablet.

Full screen (landscape)

Tap the Full-screen icon (upper right) to expand what you're streaming. To watch in landscape, rotate your phone or tablet and make sure Auto-rotate is turned on for your device.

AirPlay (iOS only)

Tap the AirPlay icon to stream CNN from your iOS device to your AirPlay-2 compatible device. Visit Stream to your TV using AirPlay for more info.

Closed captions

Tap the three dots (upper right) and then tap CC to toggle closed captions on or off. Tap TT to change the closed caption font.

To see your playback options, move your mouse over the video player when you're watching something.

Play/Pause

Click the Play/Pause button (middle of the screen) to toggle between play and pause. Then you can also press the Spacebar.

Skip Forward or Backward

Click the skip button beside the Play/Pause button to skip forward or backwards 10 seconds.

Progress bar

The progress bar shows you where you are in what you’re watching. You can click anywhere on the bar, or click and drag your location (the dot). The elapsed time appears in the lower-left corner followed by the total time.

Volume

To adjust the volume, hover your mouse over the Sound button (lower left) and then click and drag the sound level (the dot) on the volume bar.

To mute the volume, click the Sound button (lower left). To unmute, click the button again (the volume returns to the previous level).

You can also use the volume controls on your computer.

Speed

Click the Settings icon (lower right), then click Speed and choose to speed up or slow down playback.

Full screen

Click the Full-screen button (lower right) to expand what you're streaming. To exit full screen, click the button again or press the Esc key.

Closed captions

Click the CC button (lower right) to turn captions on or off.

To change the styling, select the Settings icon (lower right) and then select Subtitle Settings. Here you can adjust the font, color, and opacity. To restore a default setting, select a setting and then select Default.

Play/Pause

When you're watching something, here's how to toggle between play and pause:

  • Amazon Fire TV: Press the Play/Pause button on your Amazon Fire TV remote.
  • Apple TV: Press the touch surface or clickpad center on your Apple TV remote.
  • Roku: Press the Play/Pause button on your Roku remote.
Fast forward or rewind
  • Amazon Fire TV: Press the Forward/Rewind button on your Amazon Fire TV remote.
  • Apple TV: Press and hold the left or right side of the touch surface to fast forward or rewind (on your Apple TV remote). You can also press the left side of the touch surface to skip back 10 seconds, and the right side to skip forward 10 seconds.
  • Roku: Press the Forward/Rewind button on your Roku remote. When you fast forward or rewind, you can hold down the button to speed up.
Progress bar

The progress bar shows you where you are in whatever program you're watching. While you’re watching something, here’s how to use the progress bar:

  • Apple TV:
    • 1st Gen Remote: Press the touch surface, then swipe left or right to go forward or backwards on the progress bar.
    • 2nd Gen Remote: Press the clickpad center, then rest your finger on the edge of the clickpad ring until a ring icon appears on screen, then rotate clockwise to go forward or counter-clockwise to go backwards.
  • Roku: Press the Play/Pause button on your Roku remote, then press the Rewind button to go backwards and the Forward button to go forward on the progress bar.

Closed captions

Here's how to access closed captions:

Amazon Fire TV

You can turn captions on or off and customize their appearance. To turn closed captions on or off:

  1. Start watching something and then press the up, down, left, or right button on your Fire TV remote.
  2. Select Captions.
  3. Choose English CC.
  4. Press the back button to save your changes.

To change the caption styling, choose Settings once you've turned on CC.

Apple TV

You can turn captions on or off and customize their appearance. To turn closed captions on or off:

  1. Start watching something, then swipe down on the Apple TV remote.
  2. Choose Subtitles.
  3. Choose English (US) SDH or Off.
  4. Swipe up to save your changes.

To change the caption styling on your Apple TV, go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. Here you can adjust the closed captioning font, color, size, and opacity.

Roku

You can turn captions on or off and customize their appearance.

To turn closed captions on or off:

  1. While a video is playing, press the Star button (*) on your Roku remote.
  2. Choose one of the following: On replay, Off, or On always.
  3. Press the Star button (*) on your Roku remote again to exit the menu.

Change appearance of closed captions

You can change the caption styling on your Roku device. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions style. Here you can adjust the closed captioning font, color, size, and opacity.
